Briarwood Farms and The Missouri Angus Association Present 2018 Missouri State Fair Angus Steer Awards
The Missouri Angus Association (MAA) and Dr. Curtis Long of Butler, Mo., awarded embroidered championship director chairs to top exhibitors of the 2018 Missouri State Fair Angus Steer Contest. Winners at the fair will subsequently also receive monetary awards from Dr. Long and the MAA during the 2018 MAA Annual Banquet in February.
On Aug. 13, 2018, Roger Parker, Mexico, Mo., served as the livestock judge to junior contestants exhibiting in the On-foot Live Carcass Show. Twelve 4-H and FFA Exhibitors showed 14 registered Angus steers ranging in weight from 1,180 to 1,460 pounds. Of the five classes in the Hotel/Restaurant Division, four were won by Angus steers with the Champion and Reserve coming out of the fourth class. The on-foot winner went to past recipient of the award, Ashton Brockman of Brookfield and reserve to Travis Haerr of Palmyra.
On a cool day, Tuesday Aug. 14, Justin Adcock from Chatham, Il., placed two classes of 4-H and two classes of FFA steers. The 4-H winners went to two Saline County exhibitors. Ty Murphy with his 1,165-pound steer from the first class was Grand Champion, and Reserve went to Jillian Vogelsmeier, winner of the second class of 4-H steers. In the FFA show Reserve Champion went to Ashton Brockman of Brookfield and Grand went to Grace Bush of St. James. Grace advanced in the FFA show and was selected Grand Champion of the Purebred division.
The Missouri State Fair announced carcass results on Saturday, Aug. 18. Angus exhibitors represented their breed well by accounting for 14 of the 70 steers in the carcass contest, and ultimately anchoring the top two slots by two first-time exhibitors. Grant Huebler of Bland, Mo., received Reserve Champion Angus and Reserve Champion Hotel/Restaurant Carcass and will receive $300 for this award in addition to $200 for showing in the 4-H show and participating in the carcass contest. His PVF Insight steer had a 744-pound carcass that graded high choice with a 2.5 yield grade. Clara Warfield of Butler, Mo., exhibited the Champion Angus, Champion Hotel/Restaurant and Champion carcass over all with her GAR Sunrise calf. The steer dressed at 848 pounds, graded high choice and had a yield grade of 2.1. She will receive $1000 for overall champion, $500 for Angus champion and $200 for participating in both shows.
Other participants of the carcass show and 4-H or FFA live show included Ashton Brockman, Brookfield; Grace Bush, St. James; Reba Colin, Butler; Travis Haerr, Palmyra; Sean Houston, Savannah; Larissa Larrick, Shelbina; Peyson Larrick, Shelbina; Juliette Mead, Barnett and David Warfield Jr., Butler.
Thirteen well-deserving youth will receive an accumulated total of $5,400 in winnings from the Missouri Angus Association and Curtis and Ann Long of Briarwood Angus Farms.
